on Jul 16th, 2008Equinox OSGi book in the works!

As you may have seen in Chris’ post, we are hard at work on a 2nd edition of the RCP book. This is a much requested update to the original and will line up with new features and function available in Ganymede. Good news for RCP developers.

There is good news for Equinox and OSGi developers as well. Paul Vanderlei, Simon Archer and myself are writing a book on Equinox and OSGi. This one follows the same format as the RCP book (in fact, Paul and Simon played a significant role in helping us discover the structure of the RCP book). The book starts you off with nothing and incrementally guides you through building up an application in the tutorial section. This is followed by a number of deep dives on particularly interesting topics — again, set in the context of the same application. Finally there is a collection of reference chapters.

The focus of the book is very much on OSGi and its application to building highly modular and dynamic systems. Of course, being who we are we use Equinox and Eclipse throughout but the lessons and code should be applicable to anyone writing OSGi systems.

The books will be standalone (while trying to minimize duplication) but will work well together. I have to say, it’s quite “interesting” writing two books at once. Both books are out due out by the end of the year but look for early content as “rough cuts” and new code in the next month or so.

    Hi Jeff,

Glad to hear about this news, i was really waiting for a OSGi ( equinox ) book.

Documentation on the net is quite good, but in my idea a book is really needed.

Have you any idea when the first draft will be available??

    Thx

    Andrea

Hey Andrea, The book is in progress now and is expected to be on the shelves by the end of the year. We are however going to start putting out “rough cuts” (draft versions) in the next few weeks. I’ll announce their availability on this blog when the time comes. Thanks for your interest and I look forward to your feedback when the drafts are out.

    Jeff

Hey Rajkumar, we are working on that now. Given the lead time at the publisher etc you should see the first parts of the book on rough cuts around the end of Sept/early Oct

Will the rough cuts be available on Safari? If so any idea as to when.

    Thanks.
